The festive period is also known as’ vinayak chaturthi ‘or’ vinayak Chavithi‘. The festival celebrates Ganesha as the ‘God of New Beginnings’ and the ‘Remover of Obstacles’ as well as the god of wisdom and intelligence.
While Ganesh Chaturthi is not a nationwide public holiday in India, states take the call. States like Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Telangana observe a general holiday to celebrate the day. Therefore, schools and colleges are closed in these states.
