The value of the FIFA World Cup trophy has more than doubled since the 2022 tournament, with the gold used in its construction now estimated to be worth about USD 713,000, according to figures from a financial markets data provider.

Made from 6.175 kg of 18-carat gold, including 4.93 kg of pure gold, the iconic trophy has benefited from a sharp rise in gold prices. The precious metal has rallied in recent years amid geopolitical instability, trade-related uncertainty and concerns over slowing global economic growth.

“Although gold has eased from its recent highs, the long-term trend in its value remains remarkable,” Debajit Saha, lead analyst at LSEG Metals Research, was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

“The FIFA World Cup trophy is ultimately priceless to the players who lift it, but its gold content offers an interesting reminder of how dramatically the value of the precious metal has increased over the years,” he said in a statement.

When Brazil won the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, the trophy’s gold content was valued at roughly USD 277,000. By comparison, it was worth approximately USD 25,000 when the current trophy design debuted ahead of the 1974 tournament.

The World Cup trophy remains unique among major sporting prizes because it is made of gold, giving it a significantly higher melt value than any of its counterparts. The UEFA Champions League trophy and UEFA Europa League trophy, both fashioned from sterling silver, have estimated melt values of around USD 16,950 and USD 22,600 respectively.

In the United States, the Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, is considered the heaviest and most valuable major sports trophy. Measuring 1.62 metres in height and containing about 69 kg of sterling silver, it has an estimated melt value of USD 156,000.

Other notable trophies include the Woodlawn Vase, presented to the Preakness Stakes winner, with an estimated melt value of about USD 24,860. Meanwhile, the Vince Lombardi Trophy, produced by Tiffany & Co. and awarded each year to the Super Bowl champions, contains 3.2 kg of sterling silver and has an estimated melt value of roughly USD 7,230.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which began on June 11 in the United States, features 48 teams, marking an expansion from the 32-team format used at the previous tournament.
