A four-and-a-half-year-old girl died after allegedly being beaten by her father for failing to correctly write numbers from 1 to 50, police said on Friday.
The accused, Krishna Jaiswal (31), was arrested after his wife filed a complaint accusing him of assaulting their daughter.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at the family’s rented home in Jhadsentli, Faridabad, where they had recently moved from Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district.
Police said Jaiswal repeatedly struck the child, Vanshika, with a rolling pin and threw her to the floor, causing critical head injuries.
After the assault, Jaiswal took the girl to a hospital and claimed she had fallen down the stairs while playing, allegedly attempting to cover up the attack.
Doctors declared the child dead on arrival. His wife, Ranjita, who rushed to the hospital from work, was also told the same version of events.
However, the couple’s seven-year-old son, who was at home at the time, later told his mother that his sister had been beaten.
Ranjita also noticed visible injury marks on Vanshika’s body and subsequently approached the police.
A case of murder has been registered against Jaiswal under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Sector 58 police station.
He has been placed on a one-day police remand for questioning as investigators work to reconstruct the sequence of events and corroborate statements from family members and neighbours.
Police said both parents are employed with a private firm on alternating shifts. Ranjita works during the day, while Jaiswal works nights and stayed home during the daytime to look after the children.
The girl was not enrolled in school and was being taught at home by her father.
The couple has two other children, both of whom were present in the house when the incident occurred. Vanshika’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death.
“Medical findings are being matched with the injuries observed, and further investigation is under way,” Faridabad police spokesperson Yashpal said.
