A series of explosions were reported across southern Iran, including areas near the Bushehr nuclear facility, on Thursday (July 9), according to Iranian media. While the blasts raised concerns, the United States denied any involvement, and Iranian authorities have not accused any country of carrying out the attack.
According to AFP, citing Iranian state media, a US-Israeli projectile struck a military headquarters on the outskirts of Bushehr, where Iran’s only civilian nuclear power plant is located.
“Several areas in Bushehr province were targeted today, including the perimeter of the nuclear power plant, a military base in the town of Choghadak and a fishing pier in the south of the province,” Ehsan Jahanian, Deputy Governor of Bushehr province said.
The deputy governor confirmed that no fatalities had been reported.
Separately, Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported three additional explosions in the southern city of Konarak.
Responding to the reports, a US official told Al Jazeera that American forces were not responsible for the latest attack.
The explosions were reported just hours after Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine, the country’s holiest shrine, early on Friday.
Earlier this week, the United States carried out what it described as a “series of powerful strikes” against Iran after Tehran allegedly attacked three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

“The US strikes are in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s demonstrated aggression was unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire,” the statement read.
