Amir Shokeen apologises in a video for racist remarks.
The Delhi Police have registered a case against social media influencer Amir Shokeen at the Sadar Bazar police station over a viral video in which he allegedly made racist remarks against an indigenous youth from Tripura.
The case was registered under sections 192, 196, 352, and 353 of the BNS. Amir Shokeen also has prior cases registered against him under sections 323, 324, 504, and 506 of the IPC.
Shokeen has apologised after facing widespread criticism. The incident has triggered reactions from political leaders, including Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who warned that the accused would face punishment. The Delhi Police is investigating the matter.
What Is The Controversy
The controversy began when a video showing Shokeen interacting with the young man gained traction on social media. In the footage, the content creator allegedly mocks the youth’s appearance and identity, calls him “Chinese” and makes other derogatory comments. The video sparked outrage in Tripura and other northeastern states, with critics accusing Shokeen of promoting racial stereotypes.
Responding to the backlash, Shokeen released an apology video in which he expressed regret for hurting the sentiments of people from Tripura. He maintained that he had no intention of insulting anyone and claimed that the video was scripted, adding that he knew the young man featured in it.
Shokeen reportedly said the youth had earlier worked at a friend’s cafe in Ahmedabad. He also maintained that their interaction was intended to be humorous content.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly criticized the remarks and stated that the accused would face punishment.

His apology, however, has failed to calm the controversy. Critics have argued that racial slurs cannot be justified as humour merely because the interaction was allegedly staged.
Kiren Rijiju, BJP Condemn Remarks
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly criticised the alleged remarks and warned that the accused would face consequences.
“This evil man will be punished,” Rijiju tweeted. He acknowledged the delay in filing the official complaint but said the Delhi Police and Tripura Police would “teach him a hard lesson”.
Rijiju also held those who tolerate such conduct responsible for allowing hatred to spread. “People who tolerate such wicked behaviour in the society are also responsible for the spread of hatred,” he said.
The BJP’s Tripura unit also condemned the alleged remarks and accused the Congress of being associated with Shokeen, identifying him as an INC worker.
“SHAME ON CONGRESS. We strongly condemn these disgraceful racial remarks by INC Worker Amir Shoukeen on Tripura Youth,” the party’s Tripura unit posted on social media.
The political reactions have intensified the controversy, with demands for action against the content creator continuing.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has instructed the state’s Director General of Police to coordinate with the Delhi Police and ensure appropriate action. Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma and other political leaders have also condemned the alleged remarks.
