A 24-year-old delivery worker, who had reported being assaulted during a dispute over a torn ₹10 note in east Delhi, died on October 20, more than two weeks after the incident. The deceased, identified as Sameer Hussain, had been admitted to hospital after the alleged assault.

The dispute was reported on the night of October 4 in East Vinod Nagar. Two men have been arrested in connection with the case.

Hussain had gone to an elderly customer’s home to deliver coffee. During the investigation, he described what allegedly happened that night in a video statement.

According to Hussain, the customer took between 10 and 15 minutes to arrange the money for the order. When he eventually received the payment, Hussain found that one of the notes was a torn ₹10 currency note.

Hussain said he objected to accepting it and offered to cancel the order. He also questioned why the order had been placed if the payment could not be made properly. The customer allegedly responded by telling him to “take it or leave it” and abused him.

Hussain further alleged that another man then arrived and slapped him several times. He also claimed that the man made remarks mocking his middle-class background.

At about 11.03 pm, Hussain contacted the police control room and reported that two residents had assaulted him following the argument over the payment.

The case took a further turn the next day when police were informed that Hussain had allegedly consumed a poisonous substance. He was admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital on October 5.

A medico-legal case was prepared shortly after midnight that day, and an FIR was registered at Kalyanpuri police station.

Hussain remained in hospital until October 20, when he died.

After his death, police added Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to the case. The section relates to abetment of suicide.

Police have arrested two men and are investigating the circumstances surrounding Hussain’s death and the events that preceded it.
