Commonwealth Games gold medallist archer Deepika Kumari and her husband, Atanu Das, were both snubbed from India’s Asian Games archery team, which was announced on Monday, ahead of the coveted continental multi-sport event.

Olympians Dhiraj Bommadevara, Ankita Bhakat and Jyothi Surekha Vennam will be part of the Indian archery team for the Asian Games, which starts in Aichi-Nagoya on September 19.

The 12-member team was finalised after the second phase and final selection trials for the Asian Games and World Cup Stages 3 and 4 at the Sports Authority of India National Centre of Excellence in Sonipat.

India selected three men and three women each in the recurve and compound categories. The women’s recurve pair of Kumkum Mohod and Ankita Bhakat, who stunned the People’s Republic of China to win gold at the Archery World Cup in Shanghai, have also been named in the team.

Both Deepika and Atanu finished fourth in the selection trials and couldn’t make the cut.

Atanu competed at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and helped India bag a silver medal in the recurve team event.

India’s archery team for the Asian Games thus features Bommadevara, Neeraj Chauhan and Yashdeep Bhoge in the men’s recurve category, while Kirti Sharma, Kumkum and Ankita have been selected in the women’s recurve team.

In compound archery, the men’s team comprises Sahil Jadhav, Kushal Dalal and Thirumuru Ganesh Mani Ratnam, while the women’s team includes Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep.

The women’s compound team will be spearheaded by world No. 3 Jyothi, who won three medals at the 2022 Asian Games, claiming gold in the individual, team and mixed team events.

India won a total of nine medals in archery at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, including five gold, two silver and two bronze medals. The Indian team selected for the Asian Games will also represent the nation at World Cup Stages 3 and 4.
