When Tanya Chauhan joined IIT Madras’ BS in Data Science and Applications programme in 2023, she had never written a line of code. Today, her journey includes a research internship at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), a part-time role at a US-based company and a research opportunity at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.

Tanya’s path into technology was not straightforward. The COVID-19 pandemic affected her JEE preparation, while limited coaching options in her hometown made it difficult to prepare. She eventually took a drop year and continued studying independently.

Her entry into IIT Madras’ BS programme marked a new beginning. She started with Python and later learned Java and JavaScript. As her interest developed, she moved towards machine learning and deep learning, reported News18 Hindi.

While pursuing the programme, Tanya began looking beyond her coursework for opportunities to apply what she was learning. She applied for a Machine Learning Research Internship at DRDO in Hyderabad and was selected for a two-month onsite internship.

The experience gave her an opportunity to work on real-world research problems and apply concepts from her coursework outside the classroom. It also encouraged her to continue exploring internships and professional opportunities alongside her studies.

Tanya later joined Scale Through Automation, a US-based automation company, as a part-time business analyst. Working remotely with an international team exposed her to business processes, automation and analytics.

At the same time, she continued her studies at IIT Madras. Managing coursework and professional responsibilities was challenging, but the programme allowed her to gain work experience without putting her degree on hold.

Tanya’s interests gradually moved towards the intersection of artificial intelligence, business and research. While exploring the field, she came across the work of Professor Yin Huaxiang at NTU’s Business School.

She first studied his research papers to understand his work before contacting him about potential research opportunities. Following the selection process, she was chosen for the NTU Global Connect Fellowship.

She is now in Singapore, working in an international research environment — a significant shift from where she began her technology journey in 2023.

Tanya’s progress also involved several unsuccessful applications. She faced rejections while applying for internships, jobs and research opportunities, but continued applying and building her profile.

Her experience, she believes, highlights the importance of starting early rather than waiting until graduation to seek internships, research projects or other professional opportunities.
