A birthday celebration at a Barbeque Nation outlet in Virar, near Mumbai, allegedly took an unpleasant turn after a customer claimed to have spotted a cockroach on a dessert plate during a dinner with his group on August 19.
The customer, who said five people were dining together, shared pictures and videos of the alleged incident on social media, raising questions over hygiene at the popular restaurant chain.
In his post, the customer alleged that cockroaches were seen moving around a pastry tray at the outlet and also shared videos that appeared to show parts of the restaurant’s kitchen. He tagged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), seeking an inspection of the outlet.
“COCKROACHES at @barbequenation Virar on my birthday dinner, 19 Aug, group of 5. Premium prices, zero hygiene. @fssaiindia please inspect this outlet. @Swiggy booked from your dineout,” the customer wrote.
The FSSAI responded to the complaint on social media and asked the customer to submit a formal complaint through the Food Safety Connect App, along with the relevant details, so that necessary action could be taken.
Barbeque Nation has not yet issued a clarification or response to the allegations.
The incident comes amid growing scrutiny over food hygiene at restaurants and eateries, with several consumers recently taking to social media to flag alleged contamination and pest-related concerns.
