A man in China who coaxed his paralysed wife into selling their home before vanishing with the proceeds has been sentenced to 10 months in prison, South China Morning Post reported. The 28-year-old woman, surnamed Lin, was left paralysed after developing a rare disease affecting her central nervous system. Once a tour guide in Jiangsu province, Lin’s illness began in 2017, four years after her marriage, when her legs suddenly went numb and her condition rapidly worsened.

Confined to a wheelchair and unable to care for herself, Lin said she “watched people hanging around outside and wondered why I was stuck like this.” Her husband, surnamed Chang, later persuaded her to sell their home for one million yuan (US$140,000) and disappeared with the money. Lin sued him for abandonment in a Nanjing court. After five years in hiding, Chang was arrested in late 2022. His whereabouts during that period remain unknown.

In March last year, he was sentenced to 10 months in jail for abandonment. When confronted, Chang reportedly told police, “I would rather go to jail than return.” Following his conviction, Lin filed for divorce, citing her husband’s refusal to fulfil his responsibilities. The court approved the divorce in March this year. Local prosecutors also granted Lin 65,000 yuan (US$9,100) in judicial aid, recognising her impoverished condition.
