India’s first indigenous warhead for the BrahMos supersonic missile will be delivered from Maharashtra’s Nagpur on Thursday by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL).
The move is significant, defining India’s accelerating efforts to increase self-reliance in the defence sector, Times of India reported.
The delivery will coincide with the handover of the 100th missile booster produced by the SDAL –– a wholly owned subsidiary of Solar Industries India Limited (SIIL) that has played a crucial role in the indigenisation of India’s defence.
The development marks a significant milestone in India’s defence indigenisation programme.
India’s Indigenisation Programme
According to the Times of India report, citing sources, while India possesses missile manufacturing capabilities, it has banked on Russia –– one of the country’s long-standing defence partners –– for warheads, which is a vital component of the missile system.
The warhead was developed by the SDAL under a technology transfer arrangement with the Defence Research and Development Organisation, sources told TOI, adding the DRDO had kickstarted operations to build an indigenous warhead between 2017 and 2018 .
The indigenous warhead will be delivered to the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh, where it is set to undergo trials before induction into the military arsenal.
BrahMos’ Valour During Operation Sindoor
During ‘Operation Sindoor’ in May 2025 –– India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir –– BrahMos had successfully demonstrated its effectiveness in the conflict with neighbouring Pakistan.
Operation Sindoor marked the first operational use of the BrahMos missile in a real-world conflict.
