An elderly man was brutally murdered in Dinhata, Cooch Behar, West Bengal, in an incident allegedly linked to cannibalism. The body, with its throat slit, was found on Saturday afternoon near a pond close to a local fair. The discovery has caused widespread panic in the area.
The victim, a vagrant living near the local cremation ground, was attacked with blows to the neck and throat. After the killing, the body was washed at a nearby water tap and later hidden near a pond.

Based on the accused’s interrogation and statements of eyewitnesses, police learned that Alam, allegedly under the influence of intoxicants, murdered the unidentified man and later brought the body to his own house, where he cleaned it. His intention, according to the police, was to consume the flesh of the deceased.
Police further stated that since the unidentified man used to stay at the cremation ground, he was an easy target for the accused, which is why he was chosen.
Police further noted that Alam has been admitted to rehabilitation several times. He was arrested on Sunday night and, on Monday, was produced before the Dinhata Sub-Divisional Court, where the judge remanded him in police custody for four days.
Speaking at a press conference, Dinhata SDPO Dhiman Mitra said the accused has given a preliminary statement, claiming the murder was committed for the purpose of consuming flesh.
“He is currently being interrogated in police custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” Mitra added.
Police officials said the accused had no prior criminal record. A post-mortem revealed cut marks on the back of the neck as well. CCTV footage was not available as the area is remote.
