The BJP government in West Bengal has notified 66 castes under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, including several Muslim communities.
As per the new notification, members of communities such as Hajjam (Muslim), Chowduli (Muslim), Pahadia Muslim and Jolah (Ansari-Momin) will now be eligible for 7 per cent reservation in government jobs and services in the state.
The new notification came days after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari-led government scrapped the existing state OBC list.
The new BJP government has recently withdrawn a plea filed by the Mamata Banerjee administration against the High Court’s stay on the state OBC list.
A total of 140 sub-groups under OBC-A and OBC-B categories, including 80 belonging to the Muslim community, were in the OBC list rolled out by the Trinamool Congress government. However, the Calcutta High Court put a stay on the move, which was later vacated by the Supreme Court.
Earlier this month, the BJP formed the government in West Bengal for the first time after securing a landslide majority in the assembly election.
