During local elections in Taiwan, an independent candidate has put up an anti-India poster. In this, a big ‘No’ i.e. a ban sign was made on the picture of a Sikh man wearing a turban. The message of the poster was to oppose the migrant laborers coming from India. They are criminals, they should not be allowed to enter the country. This dispute has happened at a time when Taiwan is preparing to call Indian workers under the labor cooperation agreement with India. Taiwan’s opposition party Kuomintang i.e. KMT is also opposing calling Indian workers. MP Huang Chien-pin had cited data from India’s National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). He had said in Parliament that more than 4.45 lakh crimes were registered against women in India in 2022, which included more than 31 thousand rape cases. In such a situation, there should be more strict investigation and monitoring regarding Indian workers. They can rape women here. Indians said – This is racial discrimination. Meanwhile, an Indian living in Taiwan called it racial discrimination on social media. He said that opposing a policy is one thing, but targeting the identity and cultural symbols of any community is wrong. Another person wrote that about 7 thousand Indians live in Taiwan and most of them work in high-tech and semiconductor industry. This includes companies like Foxconn and TSMC. Wang Yi-heng, leader of Taiwan’s local political party New Power Party, also criticized the poster. He said that putting a ban mark on the Indian flag and turban is a very ignorant step. According to him, turban is not just a cloth but a symbol of faith and respect. There was an agreement regarding laborers between India and Taiwan. In 2024, an important agreement was signed between India and Taiwan regarding migrant laborers. This was called Labor Cooperation MOU. Its objective is to meet the increasing labor shortage in Taiwan and to provide employment opportunities to Indian workers there. Taiwan has been facing a labor crisis for many years. The birth rate there is continuously falling, the population is aging and the number of youth is decreasing. Its impact is especially on sectors like factories, farming, construction and elderly care. For this reason, Taiwan has been calling laborers from other Asian countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand for a long time. Now he decided to include India also in this list. Under this agreement, about 1000 Indian workers will reach Taiwan by the end of this year. After this, if the system works well and the demand from industries increases, then the numbers can be increased further. Demand to impose strict control on Indian laborers: Even when there was an agreement between India and Taiwan regarding Indian laborers, there was a controversy regarding it in Taiwan. Many people had expressed fear that the arrival of Indian laborers could increase crimes and affect the safety of women. Taiwan People’s Party leader Ko Wen-je had also said that there should be strict control on laborers coming from India. He claimed that “foreign workers fleeing” had already become a national security issue for Taiwan. Actually, Taiwan is struggling with the problem of fugitive workers. In this, migrant workers come to Taiwan legally for some company or work, but later leave their assigned work and disappear. Then they start working elsewhere without permission or start living illegally. Many leaders of Taiwan consider it a threat to national security. Another controversy occurred during this debate when the then Labor Minister of Taiwan, Hsu Ming-chun, said that initially workers could be recruited from the north-eastern states of India. Explaining the reason for this, he said that the skin color, food and religious habits of the people there are more similar to the people of Taiwan. His statement was widely criticized and people called it racist and discriminatory. After the controversy escalated, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry had to publicly apologize.
