Senior journalist and writer Mark Tully died on Sunday in a private hospital in Delhi. He was 90 years old. His close friend Satish Jacob gave this information to news agency PTI. Mark Tully was ill for some time and was admitted to Max Hospital in Saket for the last one week. Satish Jacob said that Mark died on Sunday afternoon at Max Hospital, Saket. Mark Tully was born in Kolkata. He was the New Delhi bureau chief of BCC for 22 years. He was also a renowned author and presenter of the BBC Radio 4 program Something Understood. He was knighted in 2002 and awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2005. Mark Tully wrote several books on India, including ‘No Full Stops in India’, ‘India in Slow Motion’ and ‘The Heart of India’. Tully’s family connection with Kolkata dates back to 1857. Mark Tully’s relationship with Kolkata is very old. He once told the media that his family ties to Kolkata go back at least to 1857. That year, his maternal great grandfather had escaped the rebellion in Uttar Pradesh and reached Kolkata by boat through the Ganges river. His maternal grandfather used to do jute business in Kolkata. They used to buy jute from the area which is today Bangladesh. That’s why Mark Tully’s mother was born there. Later his mother met his father in Kolkata and both of them got married there. His father was the first person in his family to come to India and later became a senior partner in Gillanders Arbuthnot, a Kolkata-based firm. Mark Tully remembers that being born in Kolkata gave him special recognition in a boarding school in Britain during his childhood. He says that at the age of ten, when he went to a British boarding school, being born in Kolkata made him different from others. He proudly said that he was born in “the second largest city” of the British Empire.
