Bank Holiday Today: Banks will remain shut in parts of the country on Monday, April 20, 2026, on account of regional festivals such as Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya. In Karnataka, all banking services will be unavailable due to these observances.
However, banking operations in most other states will continue as usual. In India, bank holidays are not uniform nationwide and differ based on local festivals, cultural events, and regional practices. Apart from these, banks across the country remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.
What is Basava Jayanti?
Basava Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Basavanna, a 12th-century philosopher, poet, and social reformer who founded the Lingayat tradition. He is known for challenging caste-based discrimination and promoting equality and social justice.
Basavanna also set up the Anubhava Mantapa, considered a pioneering spiritual and intellectual forum where thinkers, saints, and philosophers gathered to exchange ideas within the Lingayat faith.
