Education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has confirmed he will not be joining the Cockroach Janta Party’s scheduled demonstration in the national capital on Saturday. Reaffirming his presence on the ground in Ladakh, the innovator shared a video statement on X explaining that pressing environmental realities and critical seasonal preparations require his immediate focus.
Addressing ongoing administrative friction, Wangchuk emphasised that despite official measures hindering local initiatives, his team remains committed to safeguarding national security through grassroots ecological resilience. His immediate operational priorities centre on tackling acute water insecurity and preparing high-altitude fragile regions before harsh winter conditions set in.
Crucial Precedent: His Role in CJP’s NEET Protest
Wangchuk’s current absence stands in stark contrast to his central role during CJP’s earlier NEET paper leak campaign. During that agitation, he anchored the movement by undertaking a gruelling 26-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantarproviding moral weight to student grievances before concluding his fast upon written government assurances.
His strategic participation at the time elevated the exam-reform campaign into a national talking point. Having already tested and lent his support to the CJP during that critical juncture, Wangchuk has now chosen to pivot back exclusively to his core Himalayan ecological mission.
Engineering Solutions for Himalayan Climate Risks
Detailing his current scientific work, Wangchuk highlighted active preparations aimed at creating artificial glaciers to secure spring water supplies for regional agricultural communities. Additionally, his team is conducting specialised experiments to manage the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods, designed to neutralise over 200 high-risk glacial lakes across the high Himalayas.

Clarifying his absence from street-level politics, Wangchuk adapted verses by poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, remarking: “Aur Bhi Gham Hain Zamaane Main Siyaast Ke Siva… Rahaten aur bhi hain wasl ki raahat ke siva (There are sorrows in the world other than politics and governance, and comforts other than the joy of union with a beloved).” He commended those working to address political challenges, noting that non-political, nature-driven threats demand equal urgency and dedicated scientific action.
Appeal to Youth for Peace and Statesmanship
While sending his best wishes to the demonstration’s organisers, Wangchuk urged leaders across various political and social groups to maintain unity and show statesmanship. He cautioned against ideological division, stressing that constructive dialogue must remain the primary vehicle for addressing national concerns.
