Rocky Flintoff registered his maiden senior century in sensational fashion on Wednesday, smashing 123 off 76 balls to propel Lancashire to a record 443 for six in their One-Day Cup clash against Somerset at Taunton.
The 18-year-old son of former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff delivered a blistering display of power-hitting, striking 10 fours and seven sixes after coming to the crease with Lancashire placed at 138 for three.
Flintoff played a key role in a 214-run partnership with Keaton Jennings, reaching his century in just 65 balls. Jennings took advantage of a flat Taunton pitch and a Somerset attack depleted by call-ups to The Hundred, top-scoring with 156.
Lancashire’s 443 for six was the highest List A total in the county’s history.
Rocky made history in 2024 as Lancashire’s youngest-ever player when he debuted in the One-Day Cup aged 16 years and 113 days, just a week after becoming the youngest player to score a century for England Under-19s.
In January 2025, Flintoff surpassed his father’s record to become the youngest centurion for the England Lions during a match against Cricket Australia.
Injury setbacks have intermittently slowed his progress, forcing him to miss the Under-19 World Cup last winter and withdraw from The Hundred in 2025 after signing for Northern Superchargers.
However, after committing his future to Lancashire with a two-year contract extension in March, Flintoff returned to form through second XI fixtures and England Under-19 appearances before making his opportunity in the senior side count.
Before Wednesday’s century, Flintoff had posted scores of 33 not out, 41 not out, 34, 61 not out, 0 and 1 across six senior appearances this season. His assault on the Somerset attack, particularly his clean hitting through the mid-wicket region, inevitably drew comparisons with his father’s strokeplay during his England career.
There was another famous cricketing family connection in the Somerset lineup, with spinner Archie Vaughan, son of former England captain Michael Vaughan, also featuring in the match.
Andrew Flintoff represented England in 79 Tests, 141 ODIs and seven T20Is and played a starring role in the iconic 2005 Ashes triumph. He recently stepped down as England Lions head coach.
