AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palanisamy reached the Assembly with the MLAs of his group on Monday.

There seems to be a split in the AIADMK party in Tamil Nadu. This time AIADMK could win only 47 seats in the elections. One group is of Palanisamy who has 17 leaders in his support. The other group is that of Velumani who has the support of 30 MLAs.

The differences between the two factions were visible when newly elected AIADMK members came to attend the first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday.

A faction submitted a letter to Protem Speaker MV Karupaiah, urging him to declare P Velumani as the AIADMK legislature party leader. While the other group supported party general secretary Edappadi K. Demanded to declare Palanisamy as the leader of the legislature party.

On the other hand, if sources are to be believed, the group of 30 MLAs accompanying Velumani wants to support the TVK party in the state. Whereas Palanisamy is opposing it.

Edappadi Palanisamy along with his group leaders reached Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday.

Former leader of AIADMK said – there is a split in the party

Former AIADMK leader KC Palanisamy said, there is a clear split within the party. Many MLAs want change in leadership. If Edappadi remains the leader, there is a possibility that some MLAs may support TVK.

He further said that Edappadi Palanisamy should voluntarily step down from the top post of the party so that the party can regroup and contest the next elections.

4 reasons for split in AIADMK…

  • There is no confidence in the party leaders: Officially Edappadi Palanisamy should be the General Secretary of AIADMK. But most people within the party are no longer with him. It is believed that the rebel group is now preparing to formally separate.
  • Party losing in last 5 elections: This crisis within the party has come at a difficult time for the AIADMK, when the party has faced consecutive electoral defeats. Which includes the 2019 general elections, 2021 assembly elections, 2024 Lok Sabha elections and 2021 assembly elections. Apart from this, the party also faced defeat in the Erode by-election in 2025.
  • Palanisamy’s differences with BJP in 2024: Senior AIADMK leaders say their relations with Delhi have deteriorated since Edappadi Palanisamy allegedly insulted senior BJP leaders during alliance talks ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
  • Giving weak seats to BJP in 2026 elections: Rebel leaders have also accused Edappadi Palanisamy that he had given 27 such seats to BJP in the 2026 assembly elections which were almost impossible to win. This was an attempt to weaken BJP politically.

TVK Chief and Actor Vijay becomes 9th CM of Tamil Nadu

Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10. TVK leader MV Karuppaiah has been appointed pro tem speaker. The Governor has asked CM Vijay to seek the trust vote on May 13.

Non-DMK-AIADMK government for the first time after 59 years

For the first time since 1967, a government from a third party other than Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is going to be formed in Tamil Nadu.

In 1967, DMK won power for the first time by defeating Congress. In 1972, MG Ramachandran (MGR) separated from DMK to form AIADMK and since then both the parties kept coming to power alternately.

During this period, many parties like Congress, BJP, PMK, DMDK emerged, but no one could end the dominance of DMK-AIADMK.

In this way, for the last 59 years, the politics of Tamil Nadu revolved around DMK and AIADMK. After 59 years, a third party government has been formed.
