According to institute’s director Prof V Kamakoti, two supernumerary seats per program will be allotted in all BTech and BS programs under the ‘Fine Arts and Culture Excellence (FACE)’ admissions category.
The institute constituted a committee with the Ministry of Culture to select the award and scholarship recognition categories based on which students will be admitted.
A year since the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Madras became the first IIT to introduce sports category admissions, it is now set to offer admissions to undergraduate (UG) programs for those excelling in the fields of fine arts and
culture
from 2025-26 academic session, the institute’s director announced Tuesday.According to institute’s director Prof V Kamakoti, two supernumerary seats per program will be allotted in all BTech and BS programs under the ‘Fine Arts and

Excellence (FACE)’ admissions category.“Of the two seats in each program, one seat will be reserved for female students while the other will be gender-neutral. This initiative is meant to give recognition to students for their excellence in fine arts and
culture
who at the same time wish to pursue engineering and fulfil the eligibility criteria for the same,” the director said.The institute constituted a committee with the Ministry of

to select the award and scholarship recognition categories based on which students will be admitted.“While students getting enrolled in the institute through FACE will have to take the regular core courses in the discipline they have opted for, they can surely benefit from a lot of
culture
courses that we have introduced as part of the 40 per cent electives. For example, we have courses in Indian music, creative art, creative design, and fine arts, which these students can opt for as electives where they can also showcase their talent,” Prof Kamakoti said. The institute has eight sports related electives, he added.
This was the first year when the institute conducted admissions in the sports excellence category where 120 applications were received, of which five were eligible. The institute has admitted five national champions in different sports including two in swimming and one each in lawn tennis, squash, and chess. Only national and international level champions are considered for the sports excellence category.
When asked if other IITs are also considering implementing sports excellence admissions, the director said, that many other IITs have been in touch with IIT-Madras for the same. “They have been in contact with us for implementing sports quota and I am sure in the next
couple
of years they will be introducing it as well. But it all depends on how successfully these schemes are executed,” he said.
Eligibility for FACE
The admission to any of the BTech programs will be based on the JEE-Advanced exam. Students qualifying in any of the six rank lists, including common rank list or the category-wise rank list while having received recognition in any one of the nine select categories of recognition.
These nine categories of recognition include – Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puruskar under arts and
culture
awarded by the Ministry of Women and Child Empowerment; National Bal Shree Honour (in creative performance, creative art, creative painting awarded by the Ministry of Education); National Youth Award under art/
culture
awarded by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports; Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puruskar; Active B-grade certification from All India Radio, Doordarshan, Prasad Bharati, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the last six years; empaneled artists to perform in Indian Festivals Abroad by the central government during last six years; Award of Scholarship to Young Artists (Ministry of
Culture
); Award in National Youth Festival Competition in stage four where presentation is made to the Prime Minster; and Cultural Talent Search Scholarship Award (Ministry of
Culture
).
“Candidates seeking admission through FACE must have received an award that is given once-in-a-lifetime for an art form by the government of India or must have at least one of the recognitions in category A or category B in the list of awards/recognition/fellowships listed above in the last six years,” as per a statement issued by the institute.
Besides, candidates must have obtained the minimum required marks in Class XII as per the IITs eligibility criteria for JEE-Advanced.
How to apply
The candidates are required to apply through the IITM-FACE admission portal (https://jeeadv.iitm.ac.in/face) for consideration for admission under fine arts and
culture
excellence to IIT-Madras. The portal will open on June 2 for applications.
The admission process through FACE would not be through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal but on a separate portal (https://jeeadv.iitm.ac.in/face) maintained by the institute.
According to the institute, a score will be assigned to each candidate based on their fine arts and
culture
excellence as per the category mentioned in Table. A separate FACE Rank List (FRL) will be prepared based on the total score obtained by the candidates based on their performance in various fine arts and
culture
events/awards/scholarships.
“The seat allotment will be, done in multiple rounds, based only on the FACE Rank List (FRL).Mere presence in the FRL does not guarantee admission,” it stated.
After a seat is allotted to a candidate in any round, the candidate is given the option to ‘Accept’ or ‘Reject’ the allotted seat and pay the seat acceptances fee before a specified deadline for the the same. If the candidate rejects the seat, (s)he will be removed from the FACE seat allotment process permanently. If the candidate accepts the seat, they should – pay the Seat Acceptance Fee before the deadline specified ; and choose one of the two options – ‘Freeze’ or ‘Slide’ like in the case of the JoSAA admission process.
