Adil Hussain’s film ‘The Confession of Mary’ has been screened at the Toronto Film Festival. Nana Patekar also plays an important role in the film. Adil talked to Dainik Bhaskar about this film. Is this film based on the famous ‘Madatharuvi Case’ of Kerala of 1966? It would not be right to see the film as a straightforward story of any one person or event. In the context of the film, it was said in the reports that inspiration was taken from some old incident, but there was no clear information available regarding the exact identity of that incident. Therefore, instead of considering it as a direct portrayal of a real person, it is more appropriate to look at it at the level of its theme and moral dilemma. The main focus of the story is on a man who is in a position of immense responsibility and tries to maintain his principles despite the pressure of circumstances. Instead of repeating any one incident, the film presents the human and moral questions related to it in a cinematic style. Did you prepare for the role by watching any real lawyer? Instead of trying to imitate a real lawyer, I focused on how the profession works. For me, the credibility of a character lies more in his thinking and decision-making process than in his outward expressions. If the character is a lawyer then it is important to understand the situations he faces from the same professional perspective. Instead of making his personal opinion about a person, he will look at his side from a legal perspective. So I gave priority to technical understanding of the profession rather than copying a particular person. What similarity did you see between your acting style and Nana Patekar’s process? The similarity is probably at such a level that it is important for both of them to understand the character, but every actor’s path may be different. My background in theater has also taught me that a character should not be seen only on the surface, but an actor’s own preparation, experience and inner process is what makes his acting different. Nana Saheb’s specialty was that while reading the script, he would catch some important element present in the character. It is not possible to fully understand that process by looking at it from the outside, because the preparation going on within the actor is not visible. How important is the festival circuit for independent cinema? The festival circuit can be an important medium for independent cinema, as it finds an audience for films that may find it difficult to gain adequate recognition through traditional commercial releases. At the festival, the film is not only shown, but there is also an opportunity to interact with it and connect with new people. After that, stages like distribution, promotion and reaching the audience are equally important.
