However, this is not a hard and fast rule. 2. The General Secretary may not appear to be a person from any one big country; the General Secretary is considered to be the face of the entire world. Therefore, if a big leader of a big power like America or China gets this post, then other countries may fear that the influence of that country on the United Nations will increase. For this reason, preference is given to a person who is not considered close to any major power. 3. The number of countries in Asia and Africa is more. There are a total of 193 countries in the United Nations. These include many countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. These countries also wish that the head of the United Nations should not only have the thinking of Europe or America, but should also understand the voices of the rest of the world. But it is not that people from developed countries never got a chance. In 1991, candidates from Canada, the Netherlands and Norway were also in the running for the post of Secretary General. Antonio Guterres of Portugal became Secretary-General in 2016. At that time the demand to appoint a General Secretary from Eastern Europe was also gaining momentum. Shashi Tharoor was also a contender from India in 2006. Indian MP Shashi Tharoor has also been a contender for the post of UN Secretary General. In 2006, the Manmohan Singh government made him its candidate for the post of UN Secretary General. Tharoor was working in UN since 1978. India described his long UN experience and understanding of international affairs as his strengths. Also, India said that now the next Secretary General should be from Asia.
