Five people were killed and two others injured after a bus lost control and crashed into a crowd at a cultural programme in Bihar’s Bettiah.

Five people were killed and at least two others injured after a bus allegedly rammed into a crowd watching a cultural programme in Bettiah, Bihar, late on Friday night.

The incident took place near Parau Tola Bankatwa, where an orchestra performance was being held as part of celebrations following the birth of a child.

According to police, the bus was travelling from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh towards Bettiah when the accident occurred. A truck was approaching from the opposite direction, and both vehicles reportedly lost control while trying to avoid a collision.

The five people who died in the accident were identified as Bahadur Mahato, Sanjay Kumar, Bhola Dubey, Devendra Dubey and Changur Ram.

Devendra Dubey, the father of the child whose birth was being celebrated at the event, was among those killed.

Several people were injured in the crash, with some reportedly in critical condition. The injured were taken to a government hospital in Bettiah for treatment.

Narkatiaganj SDPO Jayprakash Singh said the cultural programme was underway in Bankatwa village when the incident occurred.

“A cultural programme was underway in Bankatwa village at night. A truck was coming from the direction of Bettiah, and a bus was approaching from the direction of Bagaha. Both vehicles lost their balance while trying to avoid a collision. Five people watching the cultural programme were struck and killed, and two others were injured,” Singh said.

The bodies of those killed have been sent for post-mortem examinations. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.
