Reaffirming their commitment to a long-standing friendship and close strategic alliance, India and Myanmar concluded a two-day 23rd National Level Meeting on Wednesday in New Delhi. During the high-level dialogue, India underscored the critical position Myanmar occupies across its key foreign policy frameworks, specifically the ‘Neighbourhood First’, ‘Act East’, and ‘MAHASAGAR’ (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) initiatives.
The Indian delegation was led by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, while the Myanmar delegation was headed by Major General Min Thu, Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Home Affairs.
War On Transnational Crime and Intelligence Sharing
A primary focus of the two-day summit was the comprehensive review of bilateral security cooperation. Both delegations emphasized a shared commitment to strengthening defense mechanisms against a wide spectrum of organized and transnational networks.
The security talks specifically detailed cooperative measures to combat:
- Terrorism and cross-border insurgency
- Narcotics trafficking and illegal arms smuggling
- Human, wildlife, and timber trafficking
- Cybercrime and other modern variants of organised crime
To counter these threats effectively, both nations agreed to escalate mutual operational coordination, expand intelligence sharing, and launch targeted capacity-building initiatives among their respective law enforcement agencies.
Securing 1,643-KM Shared Border
The delegations extensively reviewed the prevailing security dynamics along the 1,643-km international land border dividing the two nations. Both sides reasserted that maintaining absolute peace, stability, and security along the frontier remains non-negotiable for mutual border communities.
A key diplomatic milestone of the dialogue was the mutual reassurance regarding territorial sovereignty. Both sides stressed that neither country would allow the misuse of its sovereign territory for activities detrimental to the other’s national security interests. In a vital commitment to New Delhi, the Myanmar delegation assured India that its soil would strictly not be permitted to host any anti-India insurgent activity.
Speeding Up Critical Sub-Continental Connectivity
Beyond border management, the Indian and Myanmar officials deliberated on the execution of crucial infrastructure projects linking India to Southeast Asian markets. The teams focused heavily on streamlining efforts to complete the long-delayed Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport project—which connects Mizoram to Myanmar’s Sittwe Port—as well as the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, both nations expressed immense satisfaction with the collaborative outcomes of the summit. To translate these talks into action, New Delhi and Naypyidaw agreed to maintain active, regular engagement through structured training programs, diplomatic exchanges, and the timely implementation of mutually agreed decisions.
