Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder of IndiGo and Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Kanpur, has committed an additional ₹300 crore to the institute’s Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, taking his total contribution to the ambitious medical school project to ₹400 crore.
The latest commitment comes with a matching-grant provision, under which Gangwal will match contributions from other alumni, philanthropists, and supporters up to ₹300 crore, potentially unlocking another ₹300 crore for the school’s expansion.
Gangwal had earlier contributed ₹100 crore in 2022, helping IIT Kanpur set its plans in motion to establish a medical school on its campus. The latest commitment is aimed at accelerating the development of an interdisciplinary ecosystem combining medicine, engineering, science, and technology.
The school’s development plans include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus and a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre. The facilities are envisaged to support medical education, clinical research, and healthcare delivery while bringing doctors, researchers, engineers, and technology experts together to work on emerging healthcare challenges.
The matching-grant initiative is also expected to encourage wider participation from IIT Kanpur’s alumni network, philanthropists, and other well-wishers. Gangwal’s commitment effectively seeks to leverage additional private support for the institute’s medical sciences and technology ambitions.
IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal said the institute had ventured into medical education after recognising the potential of interdisciplinary research combining engineering and technology with medicine to transform healthcare delivery, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.
“Mr Gangwal contributed ₹100 crore in 2022, which greatly helped the Institute set the plans in motion. This additional contribution of ₹300 crore by Mr Gangwal will help us bring this vision into reality sooner,” Agrawal said.
He added that the contribution reinforced Gangwal’s commitment and trust in IIT Kanpur and expressed gratitude for his continued support.
Prof. Anil K Lalwani, who was recently appointed Dean of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, described the contribution as a “historic gift”, saying it demonstrated the ability of individuals to catalyse transformative change.
Lalwani said the school’s vision of bringing together medicine, technology, and innovation could have an impact extending well beyond the IIT Kanpur campus.
Gangwal said he considered it “an honour and a privilege” to be associated with the institution, describing it as an innovative and first-of-its-kind medical institution.
The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is being developed around IIT Kanpur’s existing strengths in engineering, science, and technology, with a focus on advanced academic programmes, interdisciplinary research, futuristic medicine, and MedTech innovation.
The proposed hospital and cancer care research centre are expected to provide the clinical infrastructure needed to complement the school’s academic and research programmes. The broader objective is to create an environment where medical professionals and technology experts can collaborate on healthcare solutions and translate research and innovations into applications at scale.
With Gangwal’s latest commitment and the matching-grant mechanism, IIT Kanpur is seeking to expand the base of support for the project as it moves towards developing a comprehensive medical sciences and technology ecosystem on its campus.
