With the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections set to be held in a single phase on April 23, voters across the state are preparing to cast their votes. Polling will take place from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, with counting scheduled for May 4.
Election authorities have deployed around 300 companies of security forces to ensure a free and fair process, while large-scale logistics, including the movement of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), VVPAT units and polling materials, have been completed across districts such as Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Dindigul.
As voters head to polling stations, one common question remains: Can you vote without a voter ID card?
Can You Vote Without Voter ID?
Yes, you can vote without a voter ID cardbut only if your name appears in the electoral roll and you carry a valid alternative identity document.
According to the Election Commission of India, the voter ID (EPIC) is not the only document accepted at polling booths. What matters is that your name is listed in the voter list and your identity can be verified.
What Documents Are Accepted Instead Of Voter ID?
If you do not have your voter ID card, you can carry any one of the following:
- Passport
- Driving licence
- PAN card
- Aadhaar card
- Bank or post office passbook with photograph
- Government or PSU-issued service ID
- MNREGA job card
- Pension document with photograph
- Health insurance smart card
- Official ID cards issued to MPs/MLAs/MLCs
Important: You must carry one of these documents to be allowed to vote.
Is Booth Slip Enough For Voting?
No. The booth slip (Voter Information Slip) is not a valid identity document.
According to the Election Commission of India, the slip is only meant to help voters:
- Locate their polling station.
- Check their serial number.
- Avoid confusion at the booth.
It cannot be used as proof of identity on its own.
You can vote only if your name is in the electoral roll.
You can verify this by:
- Visiting electoralsearch.eci.gov.in
- Using the Voter Helpline App.
- Calling the voter helpline 1950.
- Sending an SMS with your EPIC number.
How To Download Your Booth Slip
Voters can download their booth slip online via:
- voters.eci.gov.in
- electoralsearch.eci.gov.in
You can also access it through the Voter Helpline App using your EPIC number or personal details.
What Happens At The Polling Booth
According to the Election Commission of India, the process is:
- Your name is verified on the voter list.
- Your ID is checked.
- Your finger is marked with indelible ink.
- You sign the register (Form 17A).
- You vote using the EVM.
You can see your vote briefly on the VVPAT screen.
Mobile phones and electronic devices are not allowed inside the polling booth.
What If You Haven’t Received A Booth Slip?
There is no cause for concern. Booth slips are usually distributed by Booth Level Officers, but if you have not received one:
You can download it online Or simply carry a valid ID and vote if your name is on the roll.
For voters in Tamil Nadu, the key rule is: Voter’s name must be on the voter list and voter must carry a valid ID.
