Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned Afghanistan’s recent acts of provocation along Pakistan’s border areas.
Commending Pakistan’s armed forces for their robust and effective response, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the Pakistan Army for safeguarding the nation’s frontiers with professionalism and resolve.
“We take great pride in the professional excellence of our armed forces,” the Prime Minister said.
“Under the bold leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army not only gave a firm and fitting response to Afghanistan’s aggression but also destroyed several of their posts, forcing retreat. There will be no compromise on Pakistan’s defence. Every act of aggression will be met with a strong and effective response,” he said.
The PM reaffirmed that Pakistan’s defence rests in capable hands, and the nation knows how to protect every inch of its territory.
He further stated that Pakistan’s armed forces have always given a decisive and befitting reply to any form of external aggression and that the entire nation stands united with its security forces.
Highlighting the issue of cross-border terrorism, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan has repeatedly shared information with Afghanistan regarding the presence of terrorist elements such as ‘Fitna-tul-Khawarij’ and ‘Fitna-tul-Hindustan’, who are using Afghan soil to launch attacks against Pakistan.
“These terrorist organisations enjoy support from elements within Afghanistan,” the Prime Minister noted.
Pakistan expects the interim Afghan government to ensure that its territory is not used by terrorist groups to carry out attacks against Pakistan, he concluded.
Afghanistan-Pakistan clash
Afghanistan said Sunday it killed 58 Pakistani soldiers in overnight border operations, in response to what it called repeated violations of its territory and airspace.
Earlier in the week, Afghan authorities accused Pakistan of bombing the capital, Kabul, and a market in the country’s east. Pakistan did not claim responsibility for the assault.
The Taliban government’s chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said Afghan forces have captured 25 Pakistani army posts, 58 soldiers have been killed, and 30 others wounded.
“The situation on all official borders and de facto lines of Afghanistan is under complete control, and illegal activities have been largely prevented,” Mujahid told a press conference in Kabul. There was no immediate confirmation from Pakistan about casualties.
Pakistan has previously struck locations inside Afghanistan, targeting what it alleges are militant hideouts, but these have been in remote and mountainous areas. The two sides have also skirmished along the border. But Saturday night’s heavy clashes underscore the deepening security tensions. The Taliban government’s Defense Ministry said early Sunday morning its forces had conducted “retaliatory and successful operations” along the border.
