A heated exchange broke out between two elderly men over a sunlounger at a beach in Greece, resulting in the death of one of them.
The deceased man, 82, had visited the beach with his wife on Sunday morning.
According to Greek authorities, the 82-year-old allegedly suffered a cardiac arrest during the fight at a beach in Vouliagmeni, on the Athenian Riviera.
The octogenarian had reached the popular beach before 10 am on Sunday, reportedly hoping to find a sunbed. A dispute broke out after he encountered a shortage of available loungers and began arguing with a 76-year-old man whom he did not know.
The verbal confrontation reportedly snowballed into a physical altercation, with other people allegedly joining the fight. The 82-year-old man was seriously injured and is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest during the incident.
“It seems that people who were with [the assailant] also participated,” ERT, Greece’s state broadcaster, reported.
The injured man was taken by ambulance to Asklepieion hospital in Voula. Despite medical efforts, he died at around 11 am.
Further, authorities have ordered a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, police detained the 76-year-old man and initially arrested a 21-year-old woman who was accompanying him. The manager of the beach resort was also questioned as part of the investigation.
“The incident is under investigation,” a source said, describing the confrontation as unprecedented, The Guardian reported.
“In Greece disagreement is expressed vocally, with a lot of screaming and shouting, not in fistfights like this – especially between two elderly men. I think that’s why it is so shocking.”
The incident comes amid wider public concerns in Greece over expensive private sunloungers occupying prime coastal spaces. Authorities said “all those” involved would appear before a magistrate.
