US President Donald Trump on Monday again dismissed warnings about the dangers of artificial intelligence, comparing concerns over AI to what he called a climate “hoax” and insisting that the US must maintain its lead over China in the technology race.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said people who had warned that global warming would cause catastrophe were now making similar claims about AI, including that the technology could kill people and that robots could attack humans.
“This is more of a Hoax than even that of RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, and Climate Change!” Trump wrote.
He added, “Whoever wins AI, WINS! We are leading now over China, and everyone else, and I’m going to keep it that way!”
Trump vows not to slow AI growth
Trump said he would not “stifle Growth” in an industry he believes could become bigger than the Industrial Revolution or the internet.
He said the US would be “careful” and pointed to the Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies as bodies that could intervene if necessary. But he said he would “only encourage AI” and what he called “SI (SUPER INTELLIGENCE)”.
Trump has repeatedly rejected calls for stronger guardrails around advanced AI, arguing that slowing development could weaken the US position against China.
Last week, he said fears that AI could take over or destroy the world were a “HOAX” and said the only guardrail needed was a “STRONG AND SMART” president.
Trump’s comments come as several technology leaders have warned about the risks of rapidly advancing AI. Anthropic chief Dario Amodei has called for a slowdown, while OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Elon Musk have also voiced concerns about the pace of development.
Trump has instead doubled down on AI expansion. On Saturday, he announced plans for an “AI Force” and said he would appoint an AI “Czar”, while vowing not to allow efforts to slow the industry.
