Aspirants protested against the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC)’s normalization process of marks for the 70th Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) Prelims exam on Friday at the BPSC office in Patna. However, the commission denied the charges of introducing a normalization process in the exam in an official statement and urged the aspirants to prepare for the examination and participate peacefully.
Police used mild lathi-charge to disperse a large group of protesting aspirants near the BPSC office. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajeev Mishra, many aspirants gathered near the BPSC office on Bailey Road around noon, attempting to march towards the office, reported PTI.
“When police and administration officials prevented them from proceeding, the protesters sat on the road, disrupting traffic. Despite repeated requests to vacate the area, they refused to leave. Since it is a restricted area and protests are not allowed there, a mild lathi-charge was used to disperse them,” Mishra told PTI.
Was Khan Sir Arrested in the BPSC Protest?
Patna-based tutor and YouTuber Khan Sir also joined the protest near the Gardani Bagh designated area for protests on Friday. He sat on dharna to express his support for the aspirants.
Khan Sir demanded that the BPSC chairman issue a statement ruling out the use of the ‘normalization process’ for the examination and extend the examination date, as many aspirants faced technical issues while applying. “As long as the chairman does not issue a clarification, our dharna will continue,” Khan Sir told reporters.
In response to allegations that Khan Sir was detained by the police, the SSP informed reporters that he had voluntarily gone to the Gardani Bagh police station to emphasize that the protest would persist. “Students have been staging a dharna since morning, and the government must address their demands,” he stated.
70th BPSC Prelims 2024: Why Were Students Protesting?
The protesters were demanding that the BPSC preliminary examination be conducted in a “one shift, one paper” format, rather than using the ‘normalization of marks’ process. Normalization equalizes scores from exams held in multiple shifts using a statistical formula.
No Normalization In 70th BPSC Prelims Exam
On Friday, the BPSC released an official statement announcing that the provisions of the normalization process were not mentioned in the official notification of the 70th BPSC examination, nor had the commission issued any statement regarding the same. BPSC stated that the information about normalization in the exam circulating on social media platforms is fake and urged the aspirants to prepare for the exam and appear for the test peacefully.
“It is important to clarify that the advertisement published for the 70th Combined (Preliminary) Examination does not mention the adoption of the normalization process for this exam, nor has any information been issued by the Commission regarding conducting this exam with a normalization process,” reads the press release.
“Candidates are hereby informed that the examination will be held as scheduled on December 13, 2024 (Friday), in a single shift (from 12:00 PM to 02:00 PM), and there is no proposal to adopt any normalization process for this exam,” it added.
The 70th BPSC CCE Prelims exam is scheduled to be conducted on December 13, 2024. The commission aims to recruit candidates for Group A and B posts through this examination process. Around five lakh candidates are expected to appear for the exam, which will be conducted across 925 centres.
