Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced a 7.5% reservation in professional higher education for students from rural government schools. The quota will cover professional courses such as medicine and engineering, potentially creating new opportunities for students from rural backgrounds who often face financial and competitive barriers to higher education.
The announcement was made during the Chief Minister’s Independence Day speech. The government aims to improve access to professional education for students studying in government schools in rural areas. However, details such as the eligibility criteria, admission process, and implementation timeline for the 7.5% quota are yet to be announced. Further official clarification is awaited.
‘Sahay-Hasta, Hosa-Hasta’ scheme to support rural students
Along with the reservation, the Karnataka government will implement the ‘Sahay-Hasta, Hosa-Hasta’ scheme, aimed at supporting students from rural areas in pursuing higher education. The government says that the reservation and the new scheme will together help strengthen educational opportunities for students studying in rural government schools.
AI and coding education to begin in schools
The Chief Minister also announced several initiatives aimed at bringing technology into school education. Under the proposed AI Akshara Abhiyan and Coding Gurukul programmes, AI education is expected to be introduced from Class 6.
The initiative is intended to familiarise students with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and coding and prepare them for future career opportunities. Shivakumar said Karnataka is entering a new technological era and that providing students with AI and coding skills will be an important step towards meeting the demands of the future.
Karnataka plans state-owned AI university in Bengaluru
The Karnataka government is also planning to establish India’s first state-owned AI university in Bengaluru, according to the Chief Minister’s Independence Day address. The proposed university is part of the state’s broader strategy to expand opportunities for young people in education, technology and employment.
Expert committee to review examination system
The Chief Minister also announced plans to reform the state’s examination system. An expert committee has been constituted to examine the existing system and suggest improvements. The committee is expected to submit its report within around two months, after which the government will consider making necessary changes based on its recommendations.
