The preferences of Indians going abroad for tourism are changing. More than 40% of Indians chose new countries like South Korea, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Japan and Maldives for holidays in FY 2025-26.
According to data from Tata AIG General Insurance Company, there has been a big change in the age of passengers, preferred destinations and insurance purchases. However, countries like Britain are still the most favourites. But the speed of people going to these new places is the fastest. South-East Asia alone accounted for 26% of the total international travelers taking insurance. This sector grew by more than 10% year-on-year.
Now travelers include people of all ages. The craze of visiting these new places around the world is increasing rapidly. The largest share in this is of working youth below 50 years of age, who are leaving the traditional methods and booking insurance directly through online platforms. The trend of purchasing travel insurance online through the internet has registered an average growth of 10% every year.
There has been no significant change in the number of Indians traveling abroad in the last two years. Indians are spending an average of 24 days abroad during holidays. In this, for places like Europe and America, this journey was the longest i.e. about 32 days, whereas people are giving an average of 11 days for the trip to South-East Asia.
According to Chandrakant Said, Vice President, Tata AIG, during the busy holiday season, the trend of taking travel insurance has increased among families, elderly people and those going abroad for the first time. Indian travelers are paying most attention to security abroad. The share of people above 55 years of age among those going abroad has increased to 22%. This shows the increasing confidence of senior citizens to travel abroad. However, the largest number of trips are still made by working people. People between 21-55 years of age have the highest share of 66% in the total passengers.
