4 ministers will take oath along with CM
Himanta posted on social media on Monday that Rameshwar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog will take oath as ministers along with me. Apart from this, Ranjit Das will be the speaker of Assam Assembly.
Earlier on Sunday, Himanta had said that there may be around 18-19 ministers in the cabinet, but whether we will include new faces or retain experienced people, it will depend on the guidance we get.

BJP government for the third time in Assam
Himanta government has returned in Assam also. BJP will form the government for the third consecutive time. BJP alone won 82 seats here, which is 18 more than the majority figure. No minister of the present BJP government lost the election. This happened for the first time in the country.

Himanta is the face of BJP in the North East.
Himanta Biswa Sarma is considered an important strategist behind the growing strength of BJP and NDA in Northeast India. After switching to BJP from Congress, he played a big role in bringing regional parties across the region on a common platform as the convenor of ‘North-East Democratic Alliance’ (NEDA).
Sarma’s grip on the grassroots and ability to build coalitions in the toughest political situations has opened ‘unassailable’ doors for the BJP in the Northeast.
All eight northeastern states (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim) have BJP or NDA-backed coalition governments.
7 women in new assembly, BJP 92.1% strike rate
- Impact of BJP in Upper Assam, Congress in Lower areas: BJP made a clean sweep in Upper Assam and Barak Valley. The party won more than half the seats here. NDA also dominated in 3 tribal areas, Bodoland Territorial Area (BTC), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC). Here Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BOPF) won more seats. Congress was confined only to Lower Assam.
- BJP’s highest strike rate in Assam is 92.1%: Elections were held on 126 seats in Assam. BJP contested 89 and won 82 seats. His win strike rate was the highest at 92.1%. Congress could contest elections on 99 seats and win only 19 seats. His strike rate was 21%.
- 7 women won: A total of 59 women contested the elections on 126 seats. Could win only 7 elections. Among these, there are 6 women MLAs from NDA and 1 from Congress. This number is equal to 2021. In 2011, the maximum number of 14 women became MLAs.
- 18 Congress candidates won in Assam: In Assam, 18 out of 20 Muslim candidates of Congress won. Its ally Raijor Dal won 2 seats, including one for a Muslim candidate.
4 big factors of BJP’s victory in Assam
1. After delimitation, 36% Muslim dominated seats decreased- Delimitation took place in Assam in 2023 and the boundaries of assembly seats were re-determined. ST, SC reserved seats and Bodoland Tribal Region seats increased, but Muslim-dominated seats decreased from 41 to 26.
According to political analyst Ashok Malik, ‘The new boundaries limited the influence of Muslim-dominated areas. Also rearranged those seats where Assamese Muslims were decreasing. This gave Himanta an edge in those seats where earlier BJP was weak.
2. Muslim votes divided between Congress and AIUDF, BJP benefits- In 2021, Congress and Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF contested the elections together. He got 89% votes from Bengali Muslims and 65% votes from Assamese Muslims. In 2026, both these factions are contesting elections separately.
According to political analyst Dr. Jaideep Barua, ‘Himanta has been successful in creating two factions within the Muslim community. First he described the ‘Mian Muslims’ who came from Bangladesh as a threat to Assamese Muslims. Then by giving special status to Assamese Muslims, they secured them in their fold.
3. Popularity of Himanta Biswa Sarma and polarization of Hindu votes- The crowd that gathered at the rallies of Himanta Biswa Sarma was converted into votes. He raised the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration. This was described as a threat to Assamese culture, tradition and language. He claimed that every week 35-40 Bangladeshi infiltrators are being sent back. Due to this, BJP’s hold on Hindu votes became stronger.
According to political expert Adip Phukan, for the first time in Assam, the entire election was fought on the face of Himanta. With his sharp statements, he succeeded in establishing himself as a staunch leader like Yogi.
4. Senior Congress leaders joined BJP- Just before the elections, two senior Congress leaders Bhupen Kumar Borah and Pradyut Bordoloi joined BJP. This exposed the internal strife and political weakness of the Congress.
This time Congress contested the elections under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, son of former CM Tarun Gogoi. Experts believe that Gaurav, who became Assam Congress President in May 2025, could not establish himself in front of Himanta.
