In October 2011, Saif Ali Khan was declared the 10th Nawab of the princely state of Pataudi in Haryana through a ‘turban ceremony’.
It was the 90s. Two vehicles suddenly came face to face on a Mumbai road. A young actor was sitting in a car with his partner and friend. Then the driver of the other car suddenly took a wrong turn. The actor pointed at him angrily.
The matter escalated so much that people from both the vehicles came out on the road. Within some time a scuffle started on the road. During the fight, both of them bit each other in anger, but what happened next was no less than a film scene. Both the people, who were fighting with each other till some time ago, suddenly started laughing and then hugged each other.
This young actor was none other than Saif Ali Khan. Today, on his 56th birthday, let us know some unheard stories related to his life…
Mother was busy shooting, neighbor became ‘second mother’
Saif Ali Khan’s childhood was not like that of a typical starkid. Father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was a big name of Indian cricket and mother Sharmila Tagore was a famous actress of Hindi cinema, but there was a period of Saif’s childhood when his mother could not spend as much time with him even if she wanted to, as much as a mother wants to spend with her child.
In the few years after Saif’s birth, Sharmila was in a very busy phase of her career. She used to work in two shifts a day. One shift ran from 7 am to 2 pm and the other from 2 pm to 10 pm.
But Sharmila also believes that she was not alone in Saif’s upbringing. Her husband Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and people around supported her during this period.
During this time, a woman came into Saif’s life who compensated for his mother’s absence to a great extent. Her name was Sunita Goswami.
Sunita was not only Saif’s neighbour, but she also taught in his school. Sharmila had told in an interview given to DNA that Sunita was a teacher in Saif’s school ‘Saifee Mahal’ at that time.
Sunita along with her husband Jatin Goswami took great care of Saif. Sharmila had told that she was present at important stages of Saif’s life, but she was heavily dependent on the help of Sunita and her family for the child’s daily needs and small things.
For this reason, Sharmila did not just consider Sunita as a neighbor or a school teacher, but even called her Saif’s ‘second mother’.

Sharmila Tagore had told that in the early years of Saif’s childhood, she was not as present for him as she was for her daughters Soha and Saba.

Saif of Nawab family used to go to office by taking DTC bus.
Saif Ali Khan may have been born in the Nawab family of Pataudi, but before coming into films, his life was not like that of a royal prince. After finishing school, Saif worked in an advertising agency in Delhi for about two months.
The interesting thing was that at that time Saif’s father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi used to let him go to work by DTC bus instead of sending him to office in royal pomp.
According to an old report of India Today, Saif’s father used to send him to office by bus and gave him only Rs 200 a week as pocket money for expenses.

Saif Ali Khan’s father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (‘Tiger’ Pataudi) played a total of 46 Test matches in his international Test career.
Saif Ali Khan was working in an advertising agency in Delhi. During this time, a family friend suggested him to work in a TV advertisement of ‘Gwalior Suitings’. Saif advertised. Saif’s look and personality in the advertisement caught the attention of director Anand Mahendru. He decided to give Saif the lead role in his film.
After getting a chance to work in the film, he decided to leave Delhi and go to Mumbai. He felt that now perhaps he had found a way to start his career in films.
But after reaching Mumbai the story suddenly took a turn. The film for which Saif was signed could not be made and the project was stopped.

Saif was removed from the film ‘Bekhudi’
After the closure of Anand Mahendru’s film, Saif Ali Khan was to be launched in Rahul Rawail’s film ‘Bekhudi’. Kajol was with him in the film, but Saif was removed from the project even before the film was completed.
Saif had told in many interviews that he had to choose between his personal life and films. After this incident, it was discussed for a long time that Saif was removed from the film because of his girlfriend Amrita Singh.
However, in 2026, director Rahul Rawail said this was wrong. According to him, Saif was removed from the film not because of Amrita Singh, but because of his lack of discipline and seriousness towards shooting. Rawail said that Saif did not come on time for shooting and there were problems in his commitments.

Saif Ali Khan was replaced by actor Kamal Sadana in the film ‘Bekhudi’.
Was asked to do a nude scene in ‘Omkara’
‘Omkara’ was a very special film in Saif Ali Khan’s career. His acting as an actor was also praised. Saif also worked hard for this character, because for this role he had to learn the dialect of Western Uttar Pradesh. Before shooting he worked hard on the language.
Even when he went to Maldives for a holiday, he had the script of ‘Omkara’ in his hand. People were holidaying on the beach and Saif was sitting under an umbrella memorizing the dialogue. Saif himself had told that he used to read scripts while sitting under an umbrella in Maldives and practice continuously.
In an interview given to Hollywood Reporter, Saif had also told that he got a chance to play the character of a completely different person in the film Omkara. For this transformation, Saif even left his famous look and got his hair cut and make-up done according to the character.
This was not an easy decision for Saif. His mother Sharmila Tagore had also warned him. He had asked Saif that hopefully the director will be intelligent and a good filmmaker, because some directors change the look of the actor just to make him look different.
Another interesting incident happened during the shooting of the film. In one scene he had to speak a long dialogue in front of the mirror. Then director Vishal Bhardwaj asked him – Will you do this scene nude? Vishal’s idea was to show Saif in silhouette from behind (shadow visible), which would make the scene look more mysterious and scary.

Saif Ali Khan’s character ‘Langra Tyagi’ is based on the villain ‘Iago’ from William Shakespeare’s famous play ‘Othello’.
Saif had told that there were many people present on the set, so he hesitated a bit. He jokingly told Vishal, “Look, if you direct me naked, I will do it.” Vishal immediately refused and the conversation between the two ended as a joke.
Saif later said that now looking back, he feels that maybe that scene should have been done, because in silhouette he could have looked even scarier.
Before marrying Amrita Singh, mother had said – don’t do it.
Saif Ali Khan’s first marriage was with Amrita Singh. At the time of marriage, Saif was around 21 years old and Amrita was 33 years old. There was a difference of 12 years in the age of both.
Talking about the love story of Saif and Amrita, both of them met for the first time when many artists were called for a photoshoot.
Amrita was a big star in the industry at that time, while Saif was starting his career. During the photoshoot, Saif casually placed his hand on Amrita’s shoulder. Amrita liked his style so much that she looked at him carefully. Although at that time there was nothing like love in the hearts of both of them.

Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh were married in October 1991.
After this, the conversation between the two grew closer. One day Saif was at Amrita’s house and he had to go for shooting, but he had no money. He asked for Rs 100 from Amrita. Amrita gave her car to him. Later he admitted that one of the reasons for giving the car was that Saif should come to him again on the pretext of returning the car.
After this their relationship became serious. After dating for about three months, both of them decided to get married. The interesting thing was that he took this decision just two days before the wedding.
Saif had told that a day before the marriage, his mother Sharmila Tagore had told him that she hopes that he is happy in his relationship, but everything is fine, and I hope that you are happy in your relationship, just do not get married. However, despite this, Saif listened to his heart and married Amrita.
At the same time, after living together for almost 13 years, Saif and Amrita’s relationship ended with divorce in the year 2004. Saif Ali Khan married actress Kareena Kapoor for the second time in 2012.
Preeti will be the last one to seek help from Saif in case of kidnapping
The devastating tsunami that occurred in the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004 caused devastation in many countries. At that time Bollywood actress Preity Zinta was also present in Phuket, Thailand.
In the year 2018, Preeti had told India Today about this incident that Preeti lost many of her close friends in this accident. She later said that she was the only one in her group who survived.

Saif and Preity have worked together in many films like Kya Kehna Hai (2000), Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Kal Ho Na Ho (2003) and Salaam Namaste (2005).
At the same time, in the show ‘Koffee with Karan’ (Season 2), when Karan Johar asked Preeti that if you get kidnapped, who would be the last person from the film industry whom you would call for help? In response to this, Preity Zinta had taken Saif’s name.
Explaining the reason, Preeti had said that when she was going through the terrible situation of tsunami, Saif had sent her a message asking – Hey PJ, are you under water?
Pataudi surname was not used due to fear of failure Being from the princely state of Pataudi, Saif Ali Khan did not add the name ‘Pataudi’ to his name after coming into films.
In an interview given to Zoom, he told that when he was doing his first film, he was asked what he wanted to keep his screen name?
Then Saif did not use Pataudi in his name. He had one thing in his mind that if he failed in his film career, it should not affect the name of his family.
With this thinking in mind, Saif decided to keep his name Saif Ali Khan. He said that if he messed up or failed in the industry, he did not want to tarnish his family’s name.

Saif had bitten a person’s tooth in the middle of the road
An incident related to Saif Ali Khan’s life was told by his friend and actor Kamal Sadana in an interview given to Siddharth Kannan.
According to Kamal Sadana, he was returning from somewhere with Saif and Amrita Singh. The car was moving. Then another car suddenly took a wrong turn. Saif got angry and signaled the driver.

After this, both of them came out of the vehicles and clashed on the road. Kamal and Amrita were watching the entire incident sitting on the bonnet of the car. During the fight, both of them bit each other in anger, but the story did not end here. After some time, both of them suddenly started laughing and hugged each other. After this Saif went straight to the hospital and got a tetanus injection.
