- California Declared Diwali A State Holiday, Saying People Could Light Diyas Without Worrying About Work.

California has included Diwali in the list of its official state holidays. Governor Gavin Newsam signed the assembly bill 268 and made it a law. Now the state government employees, public schools and community colleges will be able to celebrate the holiday on Diwali.
The bill was introduced by the assembly member Ashi Kalra-who is the first Indian-American to be selected in the California Legislative Assembly. They said,
It is not just a holiday, but the identity of values that teaches Diwali, the victory of despair over hope, the victory of darkness over light, and the victory of partition over unity.
This law was also supported by assembly member Darshana Patel. The bill received widespread support from both parties. Now state employees will be able to celebrate the festival on Diwali with paid holidays. The Indian-American communities celebrated the entire California following the bill passing and the Governor’s signature on 6 October.
Institutions like ‘Coalition of Hinduj of North America’ described it as a long -awaited step. Ajay Bhutoria, an entrepreneur of Silicon Valley and former advisor to President Biden, said- Now the family will be able to light lamps without worrying about work or deadline, can make rangoli and celebrate the festival.
He also said that this decision is not only a recognition of a festival, but the Indian community is respected for the cultural and social heritage that has further enriched the identity of California.
California has now become the first state of the West Coast to declare Diwali an official holiday. Earlier, states like Pennsylvania and Connecticut also took such a step.
