Representatives of Ladakh have agreed to talks with the central government. The talks will take place in Delhi on 22 October. There was a standoff between the two sides after the violence in Leh on September 24. Before this, talks were held between the two sides in May.

Charing Dorje Lakruk, co-chairman of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), said that the talks will be held with a subcommittee of the Union Home Ministry.

The meeting will be attended by three representatives each from LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), Ladakh MP Mohammad Hanifa Jan and his lawyer. The main agenda of the talks will be the demand for statehood and security under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

4 people died in the violence of September 24

Ladakh representatives had distanced themselves from the October 6 meeting after the September 24 violence. Violence broke out in Leh on September 24 during a bandh called by LAB, leaving four dead and several injured. More than 70 people were detained. During this time, the main face of the movement, Sonam Wangchuk, was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA).

LAB had demanded to create a conducive environment before the talks, which included compensation to the families of the deceased, release of those arrested and judicial inquiry. The central government on Friday constituted a judicial commission under the chairmanship of a former Supreme Court judge to investigate the violence.

Lakaruk said he expected a positive outcome from the talks. From the LAB side, former MP Thupstan Chhewang will lead the delegation, while the KDA will be led by co-chairmen Qamar Ali Akhoon and Asghar Ali Karbalai.

Following the outcome of the meeting, the next round will be held with a high-level committee headed by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai.
