Reliance and Rolls-Royce have announced plans to build an aerospace gas turbine complex in India. In this, the capacity for possible joint development of AMCA engine will be created.
According to the companies, this complex will work for the entire lifecycle of the aero engine. This will include everything from design and development to manufacturing, testing, production and subsequent lifetime support.
This facility will not be just a manufacturing unit. It is planned to be developed as a comprehensive center for propulsion capabilities related to engineering, production and support.
What will be the role of Reliance?
According to Reliance, it will bring its technology, manufacturing, ability to work on a large scale and experience in project completion to this partnership.
Reliance Industries Executive Director Anant Ambani said that the objective of this partnership is to create a domestic ecosystem related to advanced aero engine technology in India.
He said, “India’s own capabilities in critical technologies are essential for India’s strategic self-reliance. Our objective with Rolls-Royce is to combine its world-leading expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing, large-scale and project completion capabilities. This will create an indigenous aero engine ecosystem in India.”
Ambani said that both the companies want to build a sustainable national capability that will make India self-reliant. Over time, this will help India become globally competitive in advanced propulsion technology.
What contribution will Rolls-Royce make?
Rolls-Royce will contribute its expertise in advanced engineering and aircraft engines to the proposed partnership.
Rolls-Royce PLC CEO Tufan Erginbilgich said the collaboration will combine the company’s engineering heritage and engine capabilities with Reliance’s industrial presence in India.
He said, “I am excited by the opportunity to work closely with Reliance Industries to combine our century-long heritage in advanced engineering and proven engine expertise with their domestic leadership in the Indian industry.”
Erginbilgich said this proposed collaboration, along with Rolls-Royce’s existing partnerships and capabilities in India, is an important milestone towards building a strong and self-reliant aerospace ecosystem.
Opportunities for further collaboration with AMCA
The use of the proposed complex cannot be limited to the immediate AMCA program only. Reliance and Rolls-Royce said the partnership will also open up the potential to explore broader collaboration opportunities in defence, civil aerospace and new power and propulsion systems.
The initiative is also aligned with the vision of a self-reliant India and the stated support of both the companies to develop indigenous advanced propulsion capabilities.
However, the announcement still describes the arrangement as a “strategic intent.” The companies have said they will explore the possibility of building an aerospace gas turbine complex and the proposed joint development of the AMCA engine.
In the information released, no information has been given about the investment amount of the project, timeline for commencement of construction and production capacity.
