Kerala Cantonment Police on Tuesday arrested former MLA and film director Kunju Mohammed in connection with alleged molestation at a hotel during the film selection for the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). The victim woman lodged a complaint that Kunju called her to the hotel room and misbehaved with her. The police registered his arrest during the investigation, but he was immediately released due to the anticipatory bail he had already obtained from the court.

On December 20, a Kochi court had granted anticipatory bail to Kunju with conditions that if arrested, he would be released on bail. The prosecution opposed the bail citing the seriousness of the charges, but Additional District and Sessions Judge Rekha R allowed it. A case has been registered under section 74 and 75(1) of BNS.

Who is Kunju Muhammad?

Kunju Mohammed is a famous director-producer of Malayalam cinema, whose first film was ‘Maghrib’ in 1993. He made acclaimed films like ‘Garshom’ (1998), ‘Pardeshi’ (2007). He is the founder director of Kairali TV and has been a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly twice (1994, 1996) as a Left independent candidate. He has called the allegations false.
