The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed concern over suspicious deaths and cases of sexual assault in relief camps in Manipur. The court reprimanded the state government and ordered the Chief Secretary of Manipur to file a report on all the 25 suspicious deaths that occurred in the relief camps. The report has also been asked to include post-mortem report and documents related to the cause of death. The Supreme Court cited the report of the committee headed by former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Geeta Mittal. The court raised questions regarding the safety and dignity of the displaced people living in relief camps. The court also asked the Advocate General of Manipur what action has been taken so far on the information the committee had sought on July 4 regarding 25 deaths of displaced people living in relief camps. 640 deaths have been recorded in the relief camps of 8 districts. According to the report recorded in the court order, 640 deaths have been recorded in the relief camps of 8 districts. Of these, post-mortem was conducted only in 20 cases, while criminal cases were also registered in these cases. The court questioned that when criminal cases were registered in these deaths, why the post-mortem of only 20 people was conducted.
