A painful and sensitive issue related to the caste violence of May 2023 in Manipur is again in the news. A 20-year-old woman from the Kuki-Jo community, who had alleged that she was kidnapped and gang-raped during the violence, died during treatment at a hospital in Guwahati this month. According to family members and community organizations, she was suffering from serious physical injuries and mental anguish for the last two and a half years.

The girl died on 10 January 2026. The family said that she never fully recovered after the violence. The victim had told that on May 15, 2023, she was kidnapped from an ATM booth in New Chekon area of ​​Imphal. Since then she was subjected to sexual violence and forcibly taken away in vehicles for several hours in different parts of the city. Later she managed to escape with the help of an auto driver.

After the incident, the girl was kept in a relief camp in Kangpokpi district. After that Manipur And he was treated in hospitals of Nagaland but due to health complications he was finally referred to Guwahati.

Tribal organizations alleged that she suffered serious physical injuries, mental anguish and serious uterine problems, which led to her death.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum alleged that the girl was first abducted by women associated with Meera Paibi and then handed over to the people of Arambai Tengol. The organization said that instructions were also given to kill her, but she escaped.

This incident took place during the period of caste violence which broke out in Manipur on 3 May 2023. So far, more than 260 people have been killed in this violence and more than sixty thousand people have been displaced. The police had registered zero FIR in this case, which was later handed over to the CBI, but no arrests have been made yet.

After the death of the girl, Kuki-Jo organizations have called it a failure of the justice system and said that due to such cases, the feeling of insecurity and alienation is increasing within the community.
