The price of petrol in Pakistan can become expensive by up to Rs 1000 per liter. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik said on Sunday that if there is a shortage of petrol in the country, the price may increase further. According to the minister, petrol has become costlier by about 50% in Pakistan so far. At present petrol is Rs 389.14 per liter and diesel is Rs 424.04 per liter. Due to increasing fighting in the Middle East, the price of crude oil is increasing in the world. Due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, concerns regarding oil supply have also increased. This is affecting the price of petrol in Pakistan. Government is giving subsidy to bikes and small vehicles. Amid rising prices, the Government of Pakistan has started a subsidy scheme on petrol for bikes, rickshaws, chingchi and cars up to 800 cc. In this, subsidy of up to Rs 100 per liter is being given on petrol. Every eligible person will get 4 tokens in a month. A subsidy of Rs 500 will be available on each token. The scheme now also covers motorcycles registered from 1 January 2006. According to the government, more than 17.5 lakh people have registered under the scheme. Around 15 lakh tokens have been issued and more than 6.80 lakh tokens have been used. Domestic oil can be found in Pakistan by October. Pakistan government is working on finding new oil reserves in the country. According to Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik, work on oil wells has started and crude oil is expected to be available by October. The government has also given new blocks to companies for oil and gas exploration. Its objective is to increase domestic production in the country and reduce expenditure on purchasing oil from abroad. If oil is produced at commercial level from the new wells, then Pakistan will be able to get some part of its requirement within the country itself.
