Lal Singh Arya held a press conference in Kolkata on Sunday.

BJP is on the back foot due to the party leader’s statement on Bangladeshi infiltrators in West Bengal and the allegation of supporters of Union Minister Shantanu Thakur assaulting Gosain of Matua Samduya.

During a press conference in Kolkata on January 4, National President of BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha Lal Singh Arya said – Whoever has come to India illegally from Bangladesh, their name should not be in the voter list.

There is anger in the Matua community after Arya’s statement. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya has said that this is Arya’s personal opinion and not the official opinion of the party. The video has been removed from social media.

At the same time, Gosai (Pandit) of Matua community was beaten up in Thakurnagar of North 24 Parganas. It is alleged that the assault was carried out by the people of BJP Union Minister Shantanu Thakur. Because there was a question on removing the name from SIR.

However, BJP has denied the allegations. In protest against the incident, the pro-TMC All India Matua Mahasangh has announced a road jam in West Bengal.

The Matua community is a large group of Dalit Hindu refugees from Bangladesh. Which plays a decisive role in North 24 Parganas, Nadia and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal during elections.

Demand for investigation into Thakurnagar incident

The community has demanded a fair investigation into the case of assault on Matua Gosai in Thakurnagar. It has also been said that the people whose names have been removed from the SIR should be added back.

Meanwhile, TMC leader Arup Chakraborty says that the Matua community will suffer the most from SIR.

Shah has said – Matua community need not panic

During a press conference in Kolkata on December 30, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that there is no need to panic the Matua community due to SIR, refugees need not be afraid. BJP has said that there will be no harm to the people of Matua and Namashudra communities eligible under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
