The new system was implemented from 12 midnight. Under this, collection of city entry fee started at Tallital Lake Bridge, Barapatthar and Phansi Gadhera toll posts. Municipality nainital has given the contract for toll collection for Rs 24.55 crore. This contract will remain effective till March 2028.
Now which vehicle and how much fee
According to the new system, the fee has been fixed as follows:
– Bike/Scooty of Nainital district (UK-04): No fee
– Uttarakhand Bike-Scooty from other districts and other states: Rs 100
– Four wheelers of Nainital district (UK-04): Rs 200
– Four wheelers and big vehicles of other districts and states: Rs 300
– Local residents: Will be able to get an annual pass by paying Rs 800.
That is, if a Nainital resident lives in another city due to studies or job and comes to his home in a vehicle with that number, then he may also have to pay the entry fee. This is becoming the biggest reason for people’s resentment.
Tax even for returning to one’s own city
Local people say that thousands of students and employed people of Nainital live in Dehradun, Haldwani, Delhi, Noida, Chandigarh and other cities. He has bought his vehicles there. Now when they come to their home during holidays, they will have to pay entry tax every time. People are raising questions whether there will be a price to be paid for returning to one’s own city?

There was already a dispute going on regarding the award of contract for city entry fee. According to the information, many councilors had started protesting as soon as they got the information that the Municipality had given the contract for 21 months toll collection to Ghaziabad company MG Infra. A protest demonstration also took place under the leadership of councilor Jitendra Pandey. After the protest, Municipality Chairman Dr. Saraswati Khetwal had reportedly given a written assurance that the contract would not be awarded without passing the resolution in the board meeting. It was told that the board meeting was proposed on July 18, but it is alleged that the contract was issued only on July 16. Controversy has increased regarding this also.
Nainital is a city completely based on tourism. Lakhs of tourists reach here every year. Local traders say that tourists already have to bear parking fees, green tax and other expenses. Now due to increase in entry tax many people may avoid coming to Nainital. Traders believe that this may affect local hotels, restaurants, taxis and small businesses.
What did the municipality president say?
After the controversy escalated, Municipality President Dr. Saraswati Khetwal said that at present he is out of the city. He said that after getting information about the matter, instructions have been given to the officials not to collect toll from two-wheelers. He said that the entire matter will be reviewed with the officials after reaching the municipality on Friday. However, he also clarified that the proposal to collect toll from two-wheelers has already been published in the Gazette.
