The flood of August 26 had caused devastation in Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.
After the flood in Nepal on the morning of 26 August, questions are being raised regarding the timing of issuing the alert. According to the Meteorological Department, Rasuwa district administration received information about the flood from China at 9 am. After this, at 9.15 am an SMS alert was sent to six lakh people living on both banks of the river.
The Prime Minister’s Office says that it had received information about the flood from the district administration at 8.40 am. SMS alert was sent to people at 9.35 am. On the other hand, local people claim that they had received flood warning from friends and relatives as early as 7.30 in the morning.
As of Saturday, the death toll due to floods has reached 691. More than three thousand people are still missing. These include 275 Indians. So far 7,514 people have been rescued, including 163 foreigners.
There was a flood of debris and rocks along with water in the Bhote Koshi river on the Nepal-Tibet border.
Eyewitness said – information was received at 7.30 in the morning
According to 36-year-old Ramesh Rijal, a resident of Trishuli, one of his friends living near the China border called him at 7.30 in the morning and informed him about the terrible flood. Rizal did not take it seriously. They kept preparing to send the children to school.
At 9.20 in the morning he also made a video of the construction of his new house. After this, when chaos broke out, he went to a safe place with his family.
Rajendra Dawadi, principal of Tribhuvan Secondary Co-Educational School, said that a colleague had received information about the flood from the upper area of the river. After this he instructed to ring the school bell continuously.
There are about 1,600 students in the school. According to Dawadi, the school was washed away in the flood before his eyes, although the children were rescued safely. Later he was rescued by helicopter.
The flood water came at such a high speed that people did not get a chance to recover and reach a safe place.
River’s data system shut down 13 minutes after earthquake-like tremors
According to the Meteorological Department, on August 26, at 8.37 am, there was an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude near the Nepal-Tibet border. 13 minutes later, at 8.50 am, the data receiving system measuring the water level of Bhote Koshi river stopped working.
After this, a large part of the mountain fell with snow and rocks in the Lhende Khola river of Tibet. Lhende Khola is a tributary of Bhotekoshi river. Bhotekoshi originates from China and enters Nepal.
At 9.36 the water moved towards the market, everything was washed away within 2 minutes.
Jaleshwar Sahni, a Bihar native who runs a scrap business in Trishuli market, took pictures of the devastation caused by the flood. He told that at around 9.15 in the morning, his brother present in Rasuwagadhi called and informed about the arrival of huge flood. After this Sahni went to the hills with the family.
Sahni took a picture at 9.36 am, in which flood water was seen moving towards Trishuli market. In the second picture taken just two minutes later at 9.38 am, the entire Trishuli market was flooded. That is, the speed of destruction was so fast that the entire scene changed in two minutes.
Opposition raised questions on China’s satellite system
Nepali Congress deputy leader Abhishek Pratap Shah said that China’s satellite system monitors glaciers. Therefore, China should have been informed about the danger in time.
Regarding this, the question is also being raised that why the flood warning did not reach the local administration and people at the right time.
