Nepal Floods Live Updates: The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has reached 691, with thousands of people still missing as rescuers continue clawing through mud to locate survivors, Nepal’s Police said on Saturday.
According to the Associated Press16 were dead on the Tibetan side. Teams in Nepal rescued nearly 3,000 people, including 163 foreigners, as search-and-relief operations entered their fourth day on Saturday, August 29.
Nepal’s meteorology department warned of fresh rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in the flood-hit areas, threatening to affect the ongoing rescue operations in the said region, as per media reports.
How Flood Occurred In Nepal
The catastrophic floods in Nepal and Tibet were triggered by a massive glacial and bedrock collapse in the Himalayas that tore through several villages along the Nepal-Tibet border and resulted in massive casualties as well as damage to settlements.
According to Chinese authorities, the risk of a glacial lake formed following a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border bursting has significantly diminished.
Satellite images from Thursday to Saturday showed that the lake, straddling the Nepal-Tibet border at the confluence of two rivers, has been slowly flowing through and the reservoir is decreasing, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing the Water Resources Ministry.
