Nepal has further escalated the already ongoing border dispute with India. The map printed on its new 100-rupee note shows Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as part of Nepal, even though all three areas fall within India’s borders.
India has strongly criticized the move, calling it a unilateral action that ignores historical facts. Foreign Ministry said-
Such claims do not change the truth. Nepal should respect India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The claims violate bilateral agreements.
The new note has the signature of former Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari and the year of issue of the note is written as 2081 BS (2024).
Oli government had released the controversial map 5 years ago
Nepal released this revised map for the first time in 2020, which was later approved by the Parliament. Even at that time, India had opposed this step of Nepal and called it a unilateral decision. India had said that attempts to increase the area by changing the map in this way would not be valid.
India had also said at that time that this is a one-sided and fabricated claim, which does not change the ground reality. India had clearly said that these three areas belong to it and Nepal’s expansionism will not be accepted.
