After the flash floods in Nepal, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal had said that Nepal’s greenhouse gas emissions are almost zero, yet it is paying the price of the climate crisis. He had demanded the world’s three greenhouse gas producing countries, China (the largest), America (second) and India (third), to take historical responsibility for this and said that these countries should compensate weaker countries like Nepal.

Now India’s Foreign Ministry has responded to this demand of Nepal. India’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that climate change is a common challenge. And the developed countries responsible for this should help the developing countries affected by this.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “I would like to say that India has always believed that climate change is a common challenge and any steps in this direction should be based on the principle of ‘common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities’.”
He said that the developed countries, which have historically been responsible for emissions and have contributed the most to this crisis, should come forward to help developing countries through finance and technology transfer to reduce emissions and meet this challenge.
Let us tell you that the Foreign Minister of Nepal had later clarified and said that neither the Minister nor the Nepal Government has specifically demanded compensation from India, China or America. His appeal was to the global community to understand the effects of climate change and provide long-term support.
So far, more than 1200 people have died in this accident in Nepal, while thousands of people are missing.
