Nagaland’s film ‘Aang’ has got a direct entry in the ‘International Feature Film’ category of the 2027 Oscar Awards. This will be the second film from India to go to Oscar this year.
Before this, Marathi film ‘Gondhal’ had got the official entry of India.
Actually, ‘Aang’ has won the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026. This prize gave the film a direct entry into the Oscars.
Naga filmmaker Theja Rio’s film is the story of a tribal man trying to save his culture from religious conversion. It was the only Indian film selected at TIFF this year.
Story of saving culture in film
The story is set in Nagaland in the 1960s, where the picture of the village starts changing after the arrival of an American missionary. Most of the villagers change religions and abandon their old traditions, leaving the village empty. There is the tribal chief (Angba) who wants to preserve his culture and traditions, while his son begins to be attracted to this new lifestyle and religion.
Entry into Oscars along with a prize of 20 thousand Canadian dollars
‘Aang’ was appreciated by the platform jury of TIFF for its different thinking, excellent making and story. Under this award, the makers have received a prize of 20,000 Canadian dollars. The film winning this prize gets direct eligibility for the Oscar.
BAFTA winning actor worked with Naga artists
Most of the actors in this film are from the local and tribal communities of Nagaland. Along with him, BAFTA Award (British Academy Film Award) winning British actor Douglas Henshall is also in an important role. ‘Aang’ is directed by Theja Rio and is a sequel to his 2021 short film of the same name.
The story of the film Ang is based on Nagaland in the 1960s.

India’s official entry in ‘Gondhal’ Oscars
Marathi film ‘Gondhal’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027).
This thriller film based on Marathi folk tradition will be sent to the Oscar ceremony in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category. This time, 33 films from India including Dhurandhar, Border-2, Hanuman Ansh were included in the Oscar race.
Gondhal is a psychological thriller film
This Marathi film with a runtime of 2 hours is a psychological thriller based on the folk tradition and religious ritual ‘Gondhal’ of rural Maharashtra. This film has been written and directed by Santosh Davkhar.
The story of the film revolves around a night-long Gondhal ritual held at the home of newly married couple Anand and Suman. During pujas and festivals, old disputes, personal rivalries and political tensions that have been buried among the village people start coming out.
