Mamdani addresses supporters at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater after his victory in the New York mayoral election on 4 November 2025. During this time his family was also present.
Newly elected New York Mayor of Indian origin Zohran Mamdani will take the oath of office on Thursday by placing his hand on the Quran. This will be the first time in the history of New York that a mayor will take oath on the holy book of Islam. Till now, most of the mayors of New York City have taken oath on the Bible.
However, under the Constitution, it is not mandatory to use any religious text for taking oath. Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democrat, will be New York City’s first Muslim, first South Asian and first African-born mayor. The Democrat team is planning to hold the swearing-in ceremony at two different places today.
Mamdani will first take the oath of office in a closed subway station located beneath New York City Hall. It will be a private ceremony, which will be attended by Mamdani’s family. That will be followed by a public swearing-in ceremony in the afternoon. Mamdani will place hands on two Qurans in the ceremony to be held in the subway station.
One of these would be his grandfather’s Quran and the other would be a small Quran to be kept in his pocket. It is being said that the pocket size Quran is from the late 18th or 19th century. This Quran is part of the collection of the New York Public Library’s Schaumburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

In the second swearing-in ceremony, Mamdani will use the Qurans of both his grandfather and grandmother. Not much information has been given about these Qurans. The Quran was chosen for the oath taking ceremony by Mamdani’s wife Rama Duwaji.
According to a scholar who helped him in this work, the Quran used for oaths reflects the city’s large and long-standing Muslim population.
Let us tell you that Mamdani had made inflation a major issue during the election campaign. He also openly expressed his religious beliefs. He visited mosques in the city and won the support of many first-time South Asian and Muslim voters.
Historical journey of Qurans used in oath
The pocket-sized Quran at the Schaumburg Center was part of the collection of black Puerto Rican historian Arturo Schaumburg. It is not clear how this Quran came to Mamdani, but scholars believe it reflects his interest in the historical relationship between Islam and black cultures in the Americas and Africa.
This Quran is of plain design. The Quran has a dark red cover and a floral motif. Written inside in black-red ink. This shows that it was made not just for exhibition, but for everyday use.
Since the Quran does not bear a date or the name of the author, its age was estimated based on its writing and binding. It is believed to have been composed during the Ottoman period, in the late 18th or early 19th century, in the area that includes present-day Syria, Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and Jordan.
According to Hiba Abid, curator of the New York Public Library, the Quran’s journey to New York matches Mamdani’s background. Mamdani is an Indian-born New Yorker who was born in Uganda, while his wife is American-Syrian.
