The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rains over parts of west and central India next week. The IMD on Saturday said that isolated extremely heavy rains are likely over Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh between September 15 and 17 and over west Madhya Pradesh on September 17 and 18.

Apart from this, according to IMD, a deep pressure area has formed near West Bengal and Bangladesh, due to which heavy rains may occur in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh. Heavy rains may occur in Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and northeastern states between September 15 and 20.

Four people died and two are missing due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand on Saturday. Apart from this, landslides occurred at many places in the state, due to which 478 roads were closed. These include national highways as well. Due to heavy rains, many places have been flooded and about 500 people have been shifted to safer places.

7 cm rain expected in 9 states on September 16

  • According to the Meteorological Department, very heavy rains (up to 20 cm) may occur in some parts of eastern Madhya Pradesh.
  • Heavy rain (up to 7 cm) is expected over some areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

  • Usually, the monsoon starts retreating from western Rajasthan after September 18, but this time it is expected to remain active for about 16 more days.
  • This means that the country will witness heavy rains till the end of September. According to private weather agency Skymet, there is a possibility of rain in October as well after the monsoon returns.
  • According to the Meteorological Department, this monsoon has already received 108% or 8% more rainfall. Despite this, about one-fourth of the country, or 185 districts (26%), are facing drought.
  • There are 68 districts which have received 60% of the normal rainfall, of which 19 are in Rajasthan alone. The worst affected are Uttar Pradesh (30 districts), Bihar (25), Jharkhand (11), Odisha (11), Punjab (15).

Reason for monsoon being active for 16 more days

  • According to the Meteorological Department, a depression is formed over north-western Uttar Pradesh. It is moving towards Uttarakhand. It will also affect some parts of Himachal Pradesh.
  • A new low pressure area is near South Bangladesh, which will turn into a depression in 2 days. This will be the fourth depression of this season. Due to this, there will be rain in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
  • According to the Meteorological Department, in the coming days, there will be less possibility of heavy rain in Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and southern states.
